Matcha- My Secret Superfood

Hi!

I'm Madison Jules
Here's what I believe: everyone deserves to have access to the knowledge they need to understand what's best for them so they can make informed choices about their life.

In a world of fast-paced diet trends and nutritional ‘experts’, it’s easy to get lost in the noise.

Your favorite fitness influencer might swear by Keto, while another raves about the benefits of fasting.

But the truth is, wellness isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey. It’s as unique as you are.

There are, however, certain potent, nutrient-rich ingredients known as ‘superfoods’ that consistently contribute to any healthy lifestyle.

I’m letting you in on my favorite superfood, which if you know me, you know I’m obsessed: Matcha, the classy green ingredient that’s been cherished for centuries, steeped in tradition, and bursting with benefits.

And yes, it’s more than just a trendy green powder.

What Is A ‘Superfood’ Anyway?

You might have heard the term ‘superfood’ being thrown around recently. And in all honesty, it has become a bit of a buzzword.

I like to think of superfoods as any ingredient that is especially high in healthy compounds.

Take, for example, berries with their antioxidant powers, or arugula because bitter greens (like arugula) get those salivary glands working, helping to produce enzymes that aid in digestion.

But, if you ask me which superfood is the crown jewel, the one that stands heads and shoulders above the rest, it has to be Matcha.

Here’s why I believe Matcha is the specific ‘superfood’ that takes the cake…

Why Matcha Is My Favorite Top-Tier Superfood

The moment I found Matcha, something just clicked.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not much of a coffee gal.

Especially when you factor in the potential insomnia, nausea, and increased blood pressure you get from drinking that Grande Cold Brew.

Matcha, on the other hand, can give you a long-lasting energy boost, without the crash.

Unlike regular green tea, matcha uses the whole leaf, ground finely. Which means you reap all its benefits – nothing goes to waste.

Matcha is rich in antioxidants, L-theanine, and has a high concentration of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).

(Translation: Matcha can help with your concentration, lower stress levels, and even potentially decrease your risk of chronic diseases.)

Plus, preparing Matcha is way easier than you’d think.

You can create simple Matcha Lattes in a few minutes (here’s my go-to tips) or you can mix things up and create specific themed matcha drinks (like my Earth Day-inspired Matcha recipe here!)

You can also enjoy the health benefits of Matcha from countless snacks, desserts, and meals.

Wait…! Before You Grab That Matcha Flavored Kit-Kat Bar…

Not all matcha is created equal. It’s a mistake to think that any green powder labeled ‘matcha’ will do the trick.

The quality of Matcha greatly influences its taste, nutritional value, and overall health benefits.

Personally, I aim to use Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha over Culinary Grade Matcha.

Ceremonial Grade Matcha is made from the youngest tea leaves and has a bright, vibrant green color. It’s known for its smooth, delicate flavor, has a slight natural sweetness, and isn’t bitter.

Culinary Grade Matcha is designed for cooking and baking. It has a stronger flavor profile and a more yellow-green color. It’s typically more affordable but doesn’t have the same degree of nutrients as Ceremonial Grade Matcha does.

While both types of Matcha have their pros, Ceremonial Grade Matcha will give you the purest and most concentrated nutrition.

My Top 3 Matcha Tips

How you use your matcha matters too!

Here are my top 3 tips for bringing out the flavor and making the most of the active ingredients inside of Matcha.

Tip 1: Choose Ceremonial Grade Matcha Whenever Possible – Brighter Green Is Better

Ceremonial Grade is where it’s at. It’s like the cashmere of Matcha – luxurious, smooth, and oh so vibrant. As I mentioned before, it has a superior taste and quality.

Tip 2: Use A Dairy Free Milk With Matcha If Possible

Cow’s milk and Matcha are like oil and water – they don’t mix well when you’re looking for the antioxidant benefits. Cow’s milk can reduce the benefits you get from Matcha. Try almond or coconut instead if you’re looking to drink matcha for the benefits. You’ll still get that creamy texture without losing any of Matcha’s superpowers.

I love the brand Malk almond milk and Vita Coco for coconut milk! You can even make them at home!

Tip 3: Heat It Below Boiling Temperature, Sift It Before Heating

To preserve its nutrients and avoid bitterness, try not to use boiling water to make your Matcha beverages. Aim for water that’s just hot enough (about 71°C or 160°F should do the trick). And don’t forget to sift your Matcha to get that smooth, velvety texture we all know and love without clumps.

Matcha Recipe Ideas To Quench Any Craving

Matcha isn’t just for drinking; its versatility is part of its charm.

In fact, you can weave Matcha into any of your meals.

Snacks / sides: Start your day with Matcha-infused chia seed pudding or a matcha smoothie. Just add a teaspoon to your batter / mix for a delightful twist.

Dessert: The possibilities are endless here! From Matcha ice cream to cheesecake, this green powder can transform any sweet treat.

Beverage: Beyond the classic Matcha latte, try a Matcha lemonade or even a Matcha mocktail for your next get-together.

Budget vs. Boujee

No matter your budget, Matcha can find a place in your routine.

  • Make A Quick Matcha Smoothie: Blend it with fruits for a quick antioxidant boost.
  • Brew Yourself A Classic Matcha Tea: Simple, soothing, and straight from the leaf.
  • Whip Up Some Matcha-Infused chia seed pudding: Start your morning or have a snack with a superfood twist.
  • Invest In A Premium Matcha Kit: For the connoisseurs who want the full ceremonial experience.
  • Gourmet Matcha Desserts: Indulge in high-end Matcha delicacies.
  • Try a third party tested organic ceremonial grade matcha like Pique!
